This section reflects the majority of
AI programs - those that allow the user to calculate any number of
calculations. I'm afraid I use the word formula - there are those
that prefer 'equations'. I do not disagree, just an old habit!
Some of these programs have other features (such as providing a source
of data) - all programs are categorised under their main function. |

you have to get on the 'net to work out any of the calculations.

I'm not sure if Doug intends to develop these further but these
are about the two most commonly used formulae, and more basic.
Perhaps if a non - AI needs to perform these calculations it
may be useful, but to be honest I can perform these on a calculator
quicker than it would take to dial into the Internet, then Doug's

any advances. |

[From the Web site] REC-TEC is a complex program
offering a high degree of versatility and flexibility. The program
is designed to generate multiple formulae solutions based on
the information given, not just to work single formula problems.
The program contains over 100 different formulae (available
in formulae section) which it utilizes in order to arrive at
a solution. REC-TEC uses your computer as a computer, not as
a large, expensive calculator. REC-TEC will print the data generated
(including diagrams) to your printer. The text and graphics
can be pasted directly into a document on your windows word
processor. |
| Review |
With
thanks to George Ogilvie [Oregon Collision Analysis, Inc. ,
USA] I have found REC-TEC 2001 very comprehensive
and easy to use. I use the windows version (the DOS version
ended with the advent of REC-TEC 2000). I believe that REC-TEC
will send you a DOS version if requested. The program is accurate
to beyond the fourth decimal point. Data is entered in boxes
(windows) and calculations are done by the software "on
the fly." When sufficient data has been entered to solve
the problem the results are shown. As you change the data or
enter additional data the results change. Good Points:
- Ease of use.
- Outstanding online video tutor - it takes you step
by step through each portion of REC-TEC. You can request
the tutor on CD if you have a very slow Internet connection.
- Very comprehensive - all aspects of reconstruction
addressed in detail in program.
- Probably should be called Reconstruction Programs
since it covers all aspects of reconstruction that I have
encountered (Slide to Stop, Acceleration, Falls & Vaults,
Pedestrian, Crush, 360 momentum, Energy, Heavy Truck, Pole
Fracture, Animation, Photogrammetry, Time Distance, Collision
Avoidance, etc.)
- Free upgrades!!!
- Outstanding customer service - George Bonnett, the
developer, answers your calls personally and works you through
any questions you have.
- Easy payment plan.
Bad Points
- Cost - however, it is worth every cent - none of
the other software offers you anything similar for the same
cost - and they all charge for upgrades.

I first reviewed David Bailey's "Accident Reconstruction
Programs" over a decade ago for the national law enforcement
periodical "Law & Order." His software has undergone
many improvements and one of the better features is the collection
of automobile and light truck specifications such as weight,
wheelbase, overall length and so on.
ARP incorporates a moon phase routine for those interested
in the amount of possible nighttime illumination. I've found
his program to be mostly a handy calculator but where you
don't have to remember the equations. You simply look at the
menus, pick what you want, and enter the necessary data and
you get your answer.

| Review |
Phew that was hard
work! I've just worked threw the demo and couldn't believe the
amount of data required for input, with no option to go back.
As valid as some of the research behind some of the calculations
performed (13 in all) it would be far better to only enter the
data required for the one calculation you prefer.
As an Accident Investigator it is pointless throwing loads of
data at a program if you don't understand the results. A program
should provide the answers to problems that would otherwise
be worked out by hand, to know all these 13 formula well enough
to present them to court may be a bit too much. Oh yes... DOS
- how quaint! |

Imperial or Metric
A full program that can perform all of the standard AI formulae
including speed from impact damage. The program comes with a
database of statistics (dimensions etc.) for a range of vehicles
found within the US. All calculations can be saved to file or
printed within a summary. |
| Review |
The program is now
in release 3, however for release 1:-
The program has many of the features expected of a commercial
program, such as configurable toolbar with tool tips and a
variety of options (such as turning the tool tips on or off).
Maine have chosen not to call the speed from damage calculation
"Delta V" like many investigators would but use
that phrase elsewhere. All results are shown to an appropriate
accuracy but strangely without their respective suffix such
as m/s or km/h shown on screen. This I found annoying as the
program, conveniently, permits data entry in either metric
or US imperial units it could lead to an incorrect interpretation
of the result - or maybe I'm being picky!
The results can be printed out in a slightly customisable
format with print preview an option.
The help file does not attempt to instruct the user in Accident
Investigation, however I was concerned at some of the data
included in the help file - such as stating that a coefficient
of friction for new, dry, asphalt to be in the range of 0.80
to 1.20 at speeds below 30 mph (48kph) but that this might
change to 0.65 to 1.00 at higher speeds when it is my experience
that this is somewhat misleading - but if you are an accident
investigator then I'm sure you will have your own views. I
am not aware of the background of the author(s). Neither the
program or the help file explain the origin of all of the
formulae, however, perhaps they are common in the US - can
you tell me - I'll put the answer here.
The demo is fully functional - so why not try it. After 21
days prepare for the program to stop working ! |

The demo version has
enough formulae enabled to get a feel for the program - and
it feels good! The data is input into the program using the
mouse or keyboard to negotiate the screen. The results in some
cases can be output to a table, graduating the results, for
example, through portions of time during the event (for example
skidding to stop - the speed / velocity at times during the
skid. It's very strange but the program doesn't take the benefit
of being a Windows program very well - only one calculation
sheet is available on the screen at any one time. Well try out
the trial version and see what you think. |

UK metric, European
metric and US Imperial versions available
Isahgenius is unlike most programs mentioned here. It is not
a stand alone program but a series of complex spreadsheets containing
a multitude of AI formulae. It uses the host program to perform
the calculations and functionality. The Excel and 123 versions
consist of a workbook containing 12 worksheets split into Speed,
Time, etc. Most sheets are locked except the data entry boxes
and when all the data is input the result is shown. One of the
items of data is ranged to show a range of answers. If more
than one answer is available from the known data this is provided.
For example if calculating the distance required to accelerate
from one speed to another, the time taken is also provided.
Some of the formulae offered are a combination of more than
one standard formula, such as overall stopping distance (reaction
and braking). Also there are multi and unusual formulae when
dealing with more than one vehicle.
One of the sheets is dedicated to graphs. These, as with any
of the formulae results, can be pasted into reports for a graphical
representation of the answer. |
| Review |
As with all programs
the faster your PC the faster the program runs. However, with
a conventional program not all the formulae, etc., are loaded
into the computer memory at once, but this is the case with
Isahgenius (the Works version is the least memory hungry - Bob
can advise you of system requirements). Not withstanding that,
for the very affordable price you will get almost every calculation
you require in a well set out form. The help is actually another
sheet, so pressing <F1> gets the host programs Help file,
however, it's worth read, especially to get the best out of
the graphs. |

AI
Solve
Standard formulae available. The best feature of Ai Solve
is the 'Write - Back' function. This is a user configurable
text file for your results. Some of the options available
are context sensitive help, always on top option, print preview
and the ability to save your answers to the clipboard before
pasting them elsewhere. I see it's greatest problem being
the fact that all entry forms have to be closed before another
can be opened. This is strange for a Windows 95 (or any Windows)
program. This is similar to many DOS programs. Although the
results are remembered ready for the next time the form is
opened it would be nice to have the opportunity to have more
than one open at once. I found it somewhat annoying that the
calculations are performed at every possible data entry point.
By this I mean that AI Solve will attempt to resolve the problem
as soon as possible, the user has to be careful not to use
a result before all known data is input. For example with
the Calculate µ (Coefficient of Friction) as soon as
the test velocity is entered a calculated Coefficient is given
- without a distance!
AiDamage
Up to now this has been (I believe) AiTS's premier program
and now performs the calculation of Delta-V (change of speed)
in two ways. Up to know it has used their own method of measuring
crush damage, but now uses that taught for other crush programs
(EDCRASH etc.). I believe this to be a bonus and is keeping
AiTS at the forefront of UK AI programs.
Relative Motion
Having loaded the demo I found that the 30 days available
was going to prevent a full evaluation [due to pressures of
work!]. I successfully loaded in a DXF CAD file but didn't
have time to add my own animation's to it, I had a go but
didn't find the input method as intuitive as some of the other
programs in this suite. I then played around with the demo's
supplied. They appeared a little jerky, this may be due to
the video display on my laptop. I was able to view the scenes
in 2D (plan view) and 3D - this is impressive. I was able
to rotate the scene allowing different perspective of the
same scene, very useful for evaluating witness evidence. I
could find how to zoom into the scene, and while on a 'continuous
loop' I chose to amend the lighting, locking me out of the
controls -Ctrl-Alt-Del required!
I hope, in the fullness of time, to see AiTS demonstrating
the program. I'm confident this is the future of computer
based Ai animation and with the ability to output the animated
incident to video hopefully this will be accepted in UK courts. |

A very reasonably priced
program that performs most base AI calculations. The demo only
always output to the screen so I can't really comment on the
printed saved output. There are some shortcomings, but for this
price they are not worth worrying about. |

thanks to Carl Hindley: I like the fact it [the
demo] was fully functional, which enticed me to buy it, having
had the opportunity to review thoroughly, I am very pleased
with this Suite, it does everything I need. The 'Einstein's
function could prove very useful for me in the future, and I
particularly like the precision of 'all units'. Database is
good, all necessary information there. In general, it is comprehensive
program. All in all, a very good program, and at £100
it is 'nicely' priced. Also as yet, I have not found any errors,
so it gets my recommendation ! |

With
thanks to Guy R DAY [TAIRS, UK] This program
is a collection of some 46 formula to assist in solving AI problems.
The AI City and Guilds syllabus formula and definitions are
shown in the comprehensive Help files as are the other formula
such as gear ratio speed calcs and overturn velocities. There
is a facility to hold various calculation boxes on screen to
assist in 'but what if' calculations. The screen display is
the standard Windows layout and once the route to each program
is known, the data entry is easy and quickly made. In many programs,
data entry outside acceptable parameters is rejected making
for a system of entry error checking. There are shortcut buttons
to AITOOLKIT-DAMAGE, together with your favourite Word processing,
CAD and calculator packages. The program was written by Accident
Investigators for Accident Investigators and is a very useful
tool. |
